THE JOURNEY FROM CAMPUS LIFE
TO CORPORATE LIFE AS AN INTERN

Not long ago, when I was still in college, I had this dream of dressing up and entering the corporate world—a world where you work and earn money for it. Everything seemed that simple, but little did I know that I was going to be on a life-altering journey that would totally change my outlook.
I secured an internship as a social media marketing intern with BENCHMARK GROUP, a digital marketing firm, and was excited to start this new journey. My workplace was assigned in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, which I had never visited before. Once I began interning, the first couple of days were a struggle; I was having some major back problems because I wasn’t accustomed to being seated and working all day. At first, I immersed myself in research, going through numerous brand pages and websites of our customers. Before long, I was writing content and putting it out onto the web. I even picked up on how to place ads on other social media sites. Following are some of the important learnings I gained through my internship:

1. The Transition from Campus to Corporate

Transition from college to corporate is a big jump.
There are no jokes with deadlines, expectations are high, and the work you do actually counts towards business results. On my first day, I was taken aback by how professional all the people were in their communication, the accuracy of meetings, and the culture of time and collaboration. It dawned on me that this experience was not just about learning; it was about adjusting to a new reality.

2. Learning by Doing

Unlike the world of academics, where theory tends to be the supreme entity, the corporate world lives and breathes practical implementation.

3. The Power of Communication

The most important lesson that I learned is the importance of good communication. Whether it was writing a brief e-mail, providing a rapid update during a team huddle, or sharing findings with a senior manager, I found that clarity, confidence, and courtesy are key to establishing professional credibility.

4. Mentorship Makes a Difference

I feel so fortunate to be working with professionals who are not only specialists in their area but also truly enthusiastic about mentoring. They’ve invested time teaching me, critiquing my work, and calmly answering my questions. Their encouragement helped me see how the theory translates into practice and made me feel appreciated not only as a student, but as someone who contributes.

5. Corporate Culture is the Invisible Engine

Every company has its own unique culture, and understanding it is crucial for thriving. At BENCHMARK GROUP, I’ve seen first-hand how values like integrity, collaboration, innovation, and employee wellness aren’t just slogans on a wall—they’re woven into the fabric of daily work life. The culture here fosters a motivating environment where everyone feels respected and inspired.

6. Feedback is Fuel

Having regular feedback sessions with my reporting manager has been incredibly beneficial. They’ve not only helped me pinpoint areas for improvement but also encouraged me to stretch my limits. I’ve learned to see feedback not as criticism, but as a powerful catalyst for growth.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting back on my internship experience thus far, I’m grateful for the exposure and development I’ve received. The business world can look intimidating from the outside, but once you’re inside, you see that it’s all about the individuals—teams, mentors, collaborators—working in concert toward shared objectives.

To my fellow interns and students: Think of your internship as a Launchpad, not just a box to check off. Stay curious, be observant, ask questions, take notes, and build relationships. You’ll walk away not just with experience, but with clarity, confidence, and a sense of purpose.
